Every year, it happens like clockwork. A new phone is announced with a sharper camera and a longer-lasting battery, and somehow, the phone that’s been sitting in your pocket for the past two years suddenly feels old and outdated.

Technology advances incredibly quickly, and there’s no doubt that newer devices can offer real improvements. But somewhere along the way, “new” became synonymous with “better,” and “better” became synonymous with “necessary.”

Old phones end up tucked away in desk drawers while laptops collect dust in closets, and tangled charging cables become permanent residents of a junk drawer, waiting for a device we don’t even own anymore. Eventually, though, many of those electronics do leave our homes.

Electronic waste, or e-waste, includes everything from phones and laptops to televisions, tablets, headphones, chargers, batteries, and gaming consoles. It is now one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world.

In 2022, the world generated an estimated 62 million metric tons of e-waste, enough to fill more than 1.5 million garbage trucks (Global E-waste Monitor 2024). Only about 22% of that waste was formally collected and recycled. The rest was landfilled, improperly recycled, exported, or simply undocumented (Global E-waste Monitor 2024).

However, electronics aren’t just plastic and glass. Inside every smartphone are valuable materials like gold, silver, copper, lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. Recovering these materials through recycling can reduce the need for new mining, conserve resources, and lower environmental impacts (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

The issue is that electronics also contain substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. When they’re improperly dismantled or dumped, those materials can contaminate soil and water or expose workers to hazardous chemicals (World Health Organization).

Many discarded electronics don’t stay in the countries where they were used. Some are exported overseas, where informal recycling operations recover valuable metals by dismantling devices by hand or burning plastic coatings from wires. While this can provide income for local communities, it often exposes workers and nearby residents to toxic fumes and contaminated dust (World Health Organization).

The environmental cost of a phone, however, begins long before it’s thrown away. Manufacturing electronics requires mining raw materials, consuming large amounts of energy, and transporting components across global supply chains. In fact, for many smartphones, most of their lifetime carbon emissions occur during manufacturing (European Environmental Bureau; Apple Environmental Reports).

That means replacing a perfectly functional phone every couple of years has a much larger environmental footprint than many people realize.

None of this means you should never buy a new phone. Technology is an important part of modern life, and eventually, devices do need to be replaced, but maybe we should rethink what “old” really means.

Could another year of use be more valuable than another camera upgrade? Could repairing a device be better than replacing it? The most sustainable phone may not always be the newest one.
